Is the CPHIMS certification worth it?
What it proves, what it costs in money and time, who gets the most from it, and who should wait or choose something else.
What does CPHIMS prove?
- That you met an experience requirement: years of work in information and management systems, most of them in healthcare.
- That you passed an exam built from a study of what practitioners in the field actually do, across four domains: the healthcare and technology environments, clinical informatics, information and systems management, and management and leadership.
- That you keep it current: it lapses after three years unless you renew it.
HIMSS describes the purpose as an international standard of knowledge that helps employers, the public and health professionals assess people in this field. It is a certificate of knowledge, not a licence: no law requires it to do the job.
What does it cost?
- Money: the exam fee, then a renewal fee every three years. The amounts are on the cost page.
- Time to prepare: about two months of steady study for someone already in the field. See how long to study.
- Time to keep it: 45 hours of continuing education in each three-year cycle. See renewal.
Who gets the most from CPHIMS?
- Clinicians who moved into informatics (nurses, pharmacists, physicians): it adds the systems, security and management side to clinical knowledge they already have.
- IT professionals who moved into healthcare: it adds the healthcare environment and the clinical side.
- People moving from doing to leading: a quarter of the exam is management and leadership.
- People who work across countries: it is one credential under one name, and the exam is sat at test centres around the world or online.
Who should wait, or choose something else?
- You do not have the years yet. You cannot sit the exam. HIMSS has an entry-level certification: see CPHIMS or CAHIMS?
- You want to specialise in data analysis. See CPHIMS or CHDA?
- You want deep technical skill in one area (networks, security, one vendor's system). CPHIMS is broad on purpose; a specialist certificate goes deeper.
- You expect it to replace experience. It names experience; it does not stand in for it.
What did it give me?
I built this site, and I passed CPHIMS in 2026 after nine years in the sector. What I took from it:
- It organised more than it added. The certification does not give you new knowledge so much as it puts what you already know in order and gives it a frame that is recognised internationally.
- It showed me what my job really is. The management and leadership domain made one thing clear: a large part of a clinical application specialist's work is not technical at all. It is stakeholder engagement and change management.
- It showed me where my gap was. The healthcare environment was the hardest part for me, because it rests on an American legal framework that differs from the one we work with in our region.
- It cost less time than I feared: 55 hours over 70 days, beside a full-time job. The details are on how long to study.
If you keep postponing a certification because you have no time, try one hour a day for two months and see.

Does CPHIMS raise your salary?
There is no official figure. HIMSS's candidate handbook promises none, and a number you read elsewhere describes other people in another market. What you can check yourself is whether employers where you work ask for it:
- Search job listings in your country for "CPHIMS" and see which roles name it, and whether as required or preferred.
- Look at the profiles of people in the role you want next.
- Ask your employer whether it counts in promotion, or whether they pay the fee.
How do I decide?
Three questions, in order. Am I eligible? Do roles I want name it? Can I give it two months now? Three yes answers make it a good use of the fee. If you are unsure of the last one, try a set of exam-style questions first: how they feel tells you more than any article.
