Clinical Informatics: what the CPHIMS exam asks
The domain where information systems meet the work of clinicians: vocabulary, metrics, decision support and outcomes.
What does this domain cover?
- Basic clinical vocabulary that appears in informatics: dosage frequency, routes of administration, body systems.
- Basic health IT vocabulary used in informatics work.
- Clinical metrics: average daily census, turnaround time, adherence, barcode medication administration.
- Building system functions that make clinical work more effective and efficient.
- Reading clinical and operational outcomes with analytics tools: reports, tables, graphs, charts, predictive models.
- Keeping clinical content and decision-support tools current through a defined process.
What do the questions look like?
Mostly scenarios from a ward, a pharmacy or a clinic: an alert that fires too often, a medication order that the system should have caught, a report that a clinical lead cannot interpret. You are asked what to build, what to change, or what a number means.
How should I study it?
- If you come from IT: learn the language of orders and medications first. Without it the scenarios are hard to read.
- If you come from clinical work: learn the informatics side: how a decision-support rule is built, what data it needs, and why it fails when the data is free text and not coded.
- For every alert question, think of the balance between catching real problems and tiring clinicians with false ones.
- For every metric, know what it measures, who uses it and what would make it go wrong.
- The usual trap: the elegant technical option. In a clinical scenario, patient safety comes first.
