Healthcare and Technology Environments: what the CPHIMS exam asks
The first domain of the exam: who delivers, pays for and regulates care, and the technology it all runs on.
What does this domain cover?
The healthcare environment
- Types of healthcare organizations and what each one does: hospitals, clinics, ambulatory centres, community health organizations, payers, regulators, research and academic bodies.
- How organizations work together: health information exchange, the public and private sectors, continuity of care.
- The role of information and management systems professionals inside the structure they work in.
- Laws, regulations and accreditation that govern information and systems: privacy, safety and security, patient rights.
- Trends that improve patient outcomes: telemedicine, patient portals, wearable devices, population health.
The technology environment
- Applications used in healthcare: clinical, administrative, financial, consumer-facing and business intelligence.
- The infrastructure under them: networks, communications, data integration, privacy and security.
What do the questions look like?
Many are recall and application. You are given a need or a situation and asked which kind of organization, rule, application or component fits it. The options are often all real things, and only one matches the situation described.
How should I study it?
- Draw the map first: who provides care, who pays, who regulates, who accredits, and what passes between them.
- For each law or regulation, know what it protects and whom it binds. The exam asks about its effect, not its article numbers.
- For each kind of application, know who uses it and for what decision.
- For infrastructure, know what each layer is for and what goes wrong without it: the network, integration between systems, storage and backup, security.
- The usual trap: answering as a technician when the question is asked from the organization's side.
