CPHIMS or CAHIMS? Which one fits you
Both come from HIMSS and share a name and a subject, but each is for a different stage of your career. Here is the difference in one table, then a clear answer: which one to start with.

Who each one is for
CAHIMS fits you if you are:
- A student or recent graduate in health informatics, IT or a health discipline.
- A nurse, pharmacist or technician who wants to move into informatics and has not worked in it yet.
- Working in IT outside healthcare and want to enter it with proof of the basics.
CPHIMS fits you if you are:
- Working in IT at a hospital or health facility: hospital information systems (HIS), the electronic health record (EHR), lab and radiology systems.
- A clinical applications specialist, or a nursing or pharmacy informaticist, with real experience.
- A project manager, systems analyst or consultant, or working for a health IT vendor.
Which one first?
- Count your experience against the CPHIMS requirements above. If you qualify, start with CPHIMS: it carries more weight, and CAHIMS adds no required step.
- If you do not qualify yet, CAHIMS is a good start: it proves your knowledge now and builds the base you will need for CPHIMS.
- Once your experience is complete, move on to CPHIMS. The areas are close, but CPHIMS questions go deeper: real situations that need a decision, not just definitions.
FAQ
Is CAHIMS required before CPHIMS?
No. Meeting the CPHIMS education and experience requirements is enough.
Does this site help if I am studying for CAHIMS?
Our questions are written in the CPHIMS style. CAHIMS candidates still benefit from the core questions, the explanations and the acronym cards, because both certifications share the terms and the basics. If you answer CPHIMS questions with confidence, you are above the CAHIMS level.
Does vendor or consulting experience count as "healthcare"?
Yes. The candidate handbook defines the healthcare setting broadly: a hospital, a healthcare consulting firm, a vendor, a government office, an academic institution, a payer or public health.
